History of Wears Valley
Wears Valley is named after a Revolutionary War veteran, Samuel Wear. Wear built a fort close to the entrance of Wears Valley in what is now Pigeon Forge.

Other early settlers included Aaron Crowson and Peter Percefield who navigated from North Carolina to Wears Valley in 1792.

During a period of strife between the Cherokee and Euro-American settlers, Wear’s Fort was attacked in 1793. Percefield was killed in a Cherokee attack. Wear lead a march against the Cherokee village of Tallassee shortly thereafter.
